Classroom Teacher Initial Certificate Experience Requirement
For the Initial certificates in the classroom teaching service, individuals must complete either a college supervised student teaching experience, practicum (for certain certificate titles), or paid teaching experience. Acceptable paid teaching experience in lieu of student teaching is described below.
Substitution of Experience for Student Teaching
For the "Individual Evaluation" pathway, individuals can satisfy the student teaching requirement by completing either:
- college-supervised student teaching experience
- paid teaching experience
- certified teaching assistant experience
Paid Teaching Experience
Individuals who are seeking to use paid teaching experience in lieu of college-supervised student teaching must complete 40 days of teaching experience in the subject area and grade level of the certificate sought. Such experience does not need to be continuous.
°µÍøTV public schools, BOCES and charter schools located in New York must verify the experience by entering an electronic Superintendent Statement (entitled "Paid Teaching Exp. for Initial") onto the applicant's TEACH account. All other employers may submit theÌýVerification of Paid Teaching Experience for Initial Certification Form.
Paid Teaching Assistant Experience
Individuals who are seeking to use teaching assistant experience in lieu of college-supervised student teaching must complete 1 full year (180 days) of teaching assistant experience in New York while holding a valid °µÍøTV Pre-Professional Teaching Assistant or Professional Teaching Assistant certificate.
°µÍøTV public schools, BOCES and charter schools located in New York must verify the experience by entering an electronic Superintendent Statement (entitled "TA Exp. for student teaching") onto the applicant's TEACH account. All other employers may submit theÌýVerification of Paid Teaching Assistant Experience for Initial Certification Form.
¹ó´Ç°ùÌýcertificate titles other than Speech and Language Disabilities, Library Media Specialist, and Literacy, individuals may fulfill the teaching experience requirement by completing a college supervised student teaching experience of 40 days or full-time, paid student teaching experience in the subject and grade level of the certificate sought.
For theÌýSpeech and Language Disabilities and Library Media Specialist Certificates, individuals may fulfill the teaching experience requirement by completing a college supervised practicumÌýor one year of full-time, paid experience while in a private school, a school outside °µÍøTV, or a °µÍøTV public school while holding a NYS Supplementary Certificate.
For theÌýLiteracy Certificates, individuals may fulfill the teaching experience requirement by completing a college supervised practicumÌýor one year of full-time, paid, satisfactory experience as a literacy teacher where they are working with students who are least two years behind their expected reading level. The paid experience must be in the grade level appropriate to the certificate sought. In addition, the paid experience must be in a private school, a school outside °µÍøTV, or a °µÍøTV public school while holding a Supplementary Certificate.
